Today is the U.S. Independence Day. If you plan on celebrating, first ask yourself how come we as a nation are so DEPENDENT on foreign oil and DEPENDENT on money from China? Why do our leaders, against the will of the people, hand over tax payer money to nations that openly burn our flag? Why are we locked into voting only within a corrupt two-party system that a vast majority of citizens consider to be either evil or less evil? Why does our own government blatantly lie to us (Benghazi - fact), spy on us (cell phones/internet/AP scandal - fact) despite the Fourth Amendment, and allow an unaccountable IRS to intimidate and bully citizens (fact) who protest the current administration's blatant disregard for the Constitution?

Recently the nation mostly cheered because the Supreme Court of the United States rejected a petition that would have halted gay marriage in California. Many saw this as some sort of victory, but the real issue is far from solved. In reality our government is limited by the Constitution and it should have NO SAY whatsoever over in who can and can't get married -- after all, marriage is a religious institution. Separation of church and state applies to limiting government's influence over the church, too.
Regardless of your feeliings on religion and who marries who, it isn't for government to decide. The role of government in the U.S. is ONLY to protect the liberties of its people.

So why do "we the people" cheer when government tells us what we can and cannot do even when it is beyond their boundaries to do so? By definition this is NOT Independence. And so I submit to you that we as a nation are no longer independent, and thus, there is no reason to celebrate. Still, go enjoy those fireworks as a remembrance of what we once had and perhaps may still have again some day, if people would only take the time to notice what we've lost.

Interesting comments, Dave. And, if it makes you feel any better, the a-hole we have in power up here (Stephen Harper) is worse than Obama, imho! I hope you have a good July 4th anyway.
